What we offer:

  • Proofreading
  • Copyediting
  • Line Editing

What's the difference?

It's important to know what type of services you want and what your manuscript needs. To that end, we've outlined our services below and what you can expect from each.

Proofreading is the last step prior to publication and major issues have been addressed and story structure already perfected. A proofreader then comes in and looks for errors in spelling, such as typos and missing/extra words, but also the things your spellcheck feature may miss, such as grammar, punctuation, and syntax. A proofreader also makes sure you have consistency in spelling, fonts, capitalization, and hyphenation.

The Copy Editor finesses a writer’s prose so that it observes all the conventions of good writing. A writer may be skilled at explaining a procedure or verbally depicting a scene, but the copy editor is the one who makes sure the manuscript’s syntax is smooth, that the writing adheres to the conventions of grammar, that wording is proper and precise, and punctuation is appropriate and correctly placed. They may also suggest some reorganizing, recommend changes to chapter titles, subtitles, and call out lapses in logic or sequential slip-ups.

A Line Edit focuses on writing style, language use, and creative content. Its purpose is not to correct errors, as proofreading does, although these are often highlighted as well. Line edits focus on how you utilize the words to tell the story to the reader. Is it smooth, clear, and pleasant to read? Does it convey the right tone, emotion, and/or atmosphere? Have you used the right words to give a precise meaning or do you lean on ambiguous terms or cliché phrases?

A line edit by us will address the following:

• Sentence structure (run-on sentences, repetitive constructions, etc.)

• Overused or unnecessary words or sentences

• Dialogue and paragraph issues

• Redundancies

• Confusing action or ambiguous narrative

• Unnatural transitions or shifts in tone that affect the overall feel of the story

• Passages that are boring or lack good flow

• Improving the story’s pace and/or tension • Grammar issues

How much does it cost?

Probably not as much as you might think. Here at Shine Designs and Editorial Services, we believe the industry standard is rather high and we suspect it's still based off of Big 5 pricing, but that doesn't really fly for the little guy. You don't buy a sports car on a McDonalds wage (or maybe you would; we don't judge). The thing is, Indie-authors are our coworkers and our friends and we get just how duanting it is to find a good editor and/or proofreader who isn't charging an arm and a leg. We don't want you to go without either, because that's bad form and it reflects poorly on your work, so we've devised a below-industry rate that shouldn't hurt your wallet while providing professional services.
